Neodymium Overview :-
The global neodymium market size was significantly robust in 2021, and is expected to register a rapid revenue CAGR over the forecast period. One of the key factors boosting the global market revenue growth is rising demand for neodymium magnet – one of the strongest rare-earth magnets – in various industries including consumer electronics, automotive, wind energy, and healthcare industries.
Neodymium is a lustrous silvery-yellow metal and one of the more reactive lanthanides – a group of similar metals known as ‘rare earth elements.’ The element was first discovered in 1841 by Swedish chemist Carl Gustaf Mosander, who extracted a rose-colored oxide from cerite and named it didymium. However, didymium was divided into two new components, namely, neodymium and praseodymium, by Austrian chemist Carl Auer von Welsbach in 1885. Neodymium is generally found in two allotropic forms and exists in its compounds as a trivalent ion, which is represented as Nd3+. Two most commonly used methods for obtaining neodymium from its salts are ion-exchange and solvent extraction. It is one of the most abundant rare-earth elements and is present in all lanthanide minerals including bastnasite and monazite. Countries that are leading producers of this metal include the U.S., Brazil, Russia, Australia, China, India, and Sri Lanka.
